Carmel-by-the-Sea is a little city in California. But despite that, there is much to see and appreciate in this beautiful city in Monterrey county. It was September 2016 when we drove south to enjoy the 17 Mile Drive in nearby Pacific Grove when we got a glimpse of Carmel-by-the-Sea after our tour. We had lunch at Flaherty's Oyster Bar but had too little time to go around some more.
Picadilly Park
The one thing that we did stop by was tiny but beautiful Picadilly Park. It was by accident that we found this little beauty of a plaza when we were looking for a public restroom. One public restroom was located at the park itself. While the restroom was kinda dirty for tourist standards, I guess that has more to do with users not helping much in maintaining cleanliness. That aside, Picadilly Park is just one beautiful green spot. It's picture-perfect, Poetic, and Instagram-worthy. It blends in well with the old-world, rustic charm of Carmel-by-the-Sea.
According to information posted on the park, a conservation group lobbied for the establishment of the public space to maintain a green area in the city. This is surprising since little Carmel-by-the-Sea is nowhere near industrialized. Small businesses and tourism dominate the commerce in the area. And while there is no obvious big industrial threat to the environment in Carmel-by-the-Sea, it is worth applauding efforts like this one.
Resting at a bench |
There's nothing really fancy about the public square, a small paved area surrounded by small businesses along Dolores Street. Picadilly Park is a garden within a city. Trees and flowering plants line its perimeter. A tree stands proud at the center of the green space and wooden benches are provided for visitors.
